Vacancy: Social Media Specialist

Location: Remote (must be based in the Caribbean).

Closing Date: Wednesday, July 22 (at 11:59 pm ET). Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until a successful candidate is selected, so early applications are encouraged.

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Social Media Specialist who is deeply committed to our mission. This is a part-time, remote consultant position for an initial 6-month period, potentially renewable depending on funding and performance. The position is open immediately.

The Social Media Specialist will be responsible for the day-to-day management and growth of the Hub’s presence across five platforms: X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Bluesky, and TikTok. The Specialist will translate the Hub’s policy research, events, and organizational updates into compelling, platform-appropriate content tailored to a senior DC policy audience, while also building reach in international policy circles and embassies, Global South networks, and the wider U.S. public.

In addition to GSPH’s organizational accounts, the Specialist will help build and manage the Executive Director’s presence on X/Twitter and Bluesky, and will provide secondary support on LinkedIn.

The Specialist will work from the Hub’s existing communications and social media strategies, with the latitude to propose updates as the organization’s digital footprint grows. They will coordinate closely with the Communications Coordinator for graphic and video asset production and report directly to the Executive Director.

Responsibilities

Content Scheduling, Publishing & Platform Optimization

  • Schedule and publish daily content across GSPH's platforms, applying platform-specific best practices (timing, formats, hashtags, algorithm shifts) to maximize reach.
  • Translate the Hub's policy papers, briefs, and events (~4 papers, 1–2 events/month) into accurate, platform-appropriate posts, maintaining the Hub's nonpartisan editorial voice and style guide.
  • Advise on format choices (threads, carousels, Reels, short-form video) to optimize engagement.

Community Management & Audience Growth

  • Monitor and engage with DC, international, and Global South policy conversations; manage replies/reposts and build relationships with key target accounts.
  • Grow follower base and engagement metrics; capitalize on news hooks and trending conversations relevant to GSPH's thematic areas.

Asset Coordination

  • Brief the Communications Coordinator on graphic/video needs (specs, messaging, format); review and approve before deployment.
  • Produce assets directly when possible (graphic design/video production skills will be considered a significant advantage).

Executive Director Support

  • Build and grow the ED's Bluesky and X/Twitter presence as a priority (consistent rhythm, engagement strategy); provide secondary support on LinkedIn.

Analytics & Strategy

  • Implement and refine the Hub's communications strategy as its digital footprint grows; track progress against M&E targets.
  • Produce monthly reports on follower growth, reach, engagement, and content performance across all accounts.

Content Policy

The Hub does not use artificial intelligence tools to generate published content — including posts, threads, captions, graphics, and video. All content produced under this consultancy must be original, human-authored work. AI tools may be used solely to suggest edits to existing drafts.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Policy fluency: ability to read and accurately distill U.S. foreign policy and international policy content — across the organization's thematic areas — for specialist and non-specialist audiences, with working familiarity with the key institutions, actors, and debates in both the D.C. and international policy ecosystems.
  • Platform and algorithm expertise: hands-on experience managing accounts and optimizing content across X/Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and at least Bluesky or TikTok, with a strong understanding of platform algorithms and engagement mechanics.
  • Writing: excellent written English, with the ability to adapt tone and format across platforms and audiences.
  • Analytics: experience producing social media performance reports and using data to inform content decisions.
  • Tools: proficiency with scheduling platforms (Buffer, Hootsuite, Later, or equivalent) and design tools (Canva, Adobe Express, or comparable). Requires a personal laptop with Microsoft 365.

The following are considered strong assets:

  • Graphic design and/or video production skills (Canva, Adobe Express, CapCut, Premiere, or equivalent).
  • Experience with think tanks, international organizations, or advocacy NGOs.
  • Regional fluency in Caribbean, Latin American, African, Indo-Pacific, or Middle East policy communities.
  • Multilingual capacity (Spanish, French, Portuguese, Chinese, or Arabic).

To apply, complete the application form below.

You will be asked to upload the following documents in a single PDF named “Social Media Specialist Application – [Your Name].”

  • A one-page cover letter explaining your interest and relevant experience. Include your proposed hourly rate in USD, your estimated number of hours per month required for this scope of work with a brief justification, and your weekly availability (from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.).
  • A résumé.
  • Examples of past work:

(a) Links to 2-3 content samples of posts or threads posted on X/Twitter and LinkedIn translating policy content for a senior policy audience;

(b) Links to 2-3 content samples of infographics or visual assets posted on X/Twitter and LinkedIn, where applicable.

  • Responses to the following prompts:

(a) A brief reactive post on the following hypothetical scenario:

“The IMF has just announced a new framework for sovereign debt restructuring affecting low-income countries.” Using the Hub’s published papers, draft one or two posts responding to this news on X/Twitter and LinkedIn. Include a 200-word (max) note explaining your objective and rationale.

(b) A brief growth audit:

Review the Hub’s current X/Twitter account (@GSPHub) and identify the two or three changes you would make immediately to improve reach and engagement. Submit your assessment as 3–5 bullet points, 300-word max.

  • Examples of any visual assets you have produced (please paste screenshots directly in the PDF and also provide links to the files via WeTransfer, Google Drive, or equivalent).

All application materials must be original, human-authored work. The use of AI to generate any part of your application — including posts, audit points, or visuals — is not permitted and will disqualify your application.

Only short-listed candidates will be contacted. Short-listed candidates will be invited to complete a practical assessment.
