José Miguel Ahumada

José Miguel Ahumada is a nonresident fellow at the Global South Policy Hub. He is an assistant professor at the Institute of International Studies at Universidad de Chile. He holds a PhD in development studies from the University of Cambridge, an MSc in development studies from the London School of Economics, and a master’s in international economics and development from Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
José is the author of The Political Economy of Peripheral Growth: Chile in the Global Economy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2019), which analyzes Chile's insertion into the global economy and the challenges of peripheral development. He also co-authored La Lección Nórdica: Trayectorias de Desarrollo en Noruega, Suecia y Finlandia (Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2021), examining Scandinavian development experiences and lessons for Latin American countries.
From March 2022 to March 2023, José served as undersecretary of international economic relations under President Gabriel Boric, playing a key role in Chile’s trade policy and economic relations. His research focuses on the political economy of development, development theories, the history of economic thought, and Latin American development trajectories. His recent publications explore rentism, market competition, core-periphery relations, and the normative ideas surrounding the NIEO moment.
